Lab Services

Access to laboratory services is an essential component of patient care, and British Columbia’s naturopathic doctors (NDs) play a vital role in ensuring their patients receive timely, appropriate diagnostic testing. However, the landscape of lab services in BC is complex, with NDs navigating unique challenges that impact their ability to deliver comprehensive, coordinated care.

BCND is committed to advocating for equitable access to lab services for NDs and their patients. While naturopathic doctors can access private laboratory testing through LifeLabs, they are not currently included under the provincial Laboratory Services Act (LSA), which limits the ability to access publicly funded testing. This dual system creates barriers, particularly in underserved and rapidly growing areas of the province, where patients often face long wait times, significant travel distances, and out-of-pocket costs for essential tests.

Recognizing these challenges, BCND has engaged in constructive dialogue with the Laboratory Services Division of the Ministry of Health. We are committed to continuing these important conversations, with the goal of advancing solutions that support equitable, patient-centred care.

Our work in this area also includes ongoing collaboration with LifeLabs to improve services, address operational concerns, and support clear communication protocols that benefit both practitioners and patients. Together, these efforts reflect BCND’s dedication to ensuring naturopathic doctors are fully supported in providing the highest quality of care to British Columbians.
