Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA)
BCND is closely monitoring and actively engaging with the ongoing developments related to the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA), which will significantly reshape the regulatory landscape for healthcare professions in British Columbia. As the government moves to implement this new framework, BCND has raised several concerns based on feedback from members and the broader healthcare community.
The HPOA proposes a shift away from self-regulation, centralizing control and reducing autonomy for health professions, which raises questions about how it will affect naturopathic doctors (NDs). One of our primary concerns is the potential dilution of ND representation on regulatory boards and committees. Without proper representation, the unique needs of naturopathic practice and patient care may be overlooked in decision-making processes that affect the profession.
Additionally, BCND has voiced concerns about the costs associated with the HPOA, especially regarding the increased financial burdens on regulated professionals. These costs could disproportionately affect smaller, independent practices, which may lead to challenges in maintaining affordable access to care for patients.
